Aramark's school meal carts lift breakfasts 10% in one district

At Dorchester School District 2 in South Carolina, Aramark's mobile serving carts sit by the bus loop so students pick up breakfast as they arrive.

The problem

Big high schools have a lot of students to feed in a short lunch period, and breakfast is easy to miss when students come straight off the bus.

The result

10 percent more breakfasts served at Dorchester School District 2. Dorchester School District 2 has served 10 percent more breakfasts since the Godegas moved to the bus loop. Clint ISD has seen more students eating school meals since the rollout, according to Aramark, and the company plans to bring Godegas to more schools this fall.

What they did

  1. Aramark Student Nutrition, the school meals division of the food service company Aramark, built a mobile serving line it calls the Godega, named after the bodegas of New York City. A school can set one up as an extra line at lunch or at breakfast, wherever students need it.
  2. At Clint Independent School District in Horizon City, Texas, Godegas give students at Horizon, Mountain View and Clint high schools a second lunch line, with pizza, sandwiches, salads, parfaits and smoothies.
  3. Chandler Unified School District in Chandler, Arizona, uses its Godega for grab-and-go items the regular lines don't carry, like pot stickers and chicken.
  4. At Dorchester School District 2 in Summerville, South Carolina, the team parks the Godegas near the bus loop at the high schools, so students can pick up breakfast the moment they arrive.

The cost

The trade publication FoodService Director did not report the cost of the units or the staff hours.

The payback

FoodService Director, the trade publication, did not report a payback figure.

Why it travels

Any school or campus kitchen with long lines or a rush at arrival time can try a mobile serving line. It takes one unit, food that travels well as grab-and-go, and a spot students already walk past, like the bus loop.
